In an effort to find him, San Francisco police asked Smith to reach out to investigators.
On Monday, TMZ reported that Smith has checked into rehab and was taken there by the parents of the alleged victim, who is Smith's fiancee, in the incident. TMZ spoke to the woman, and she said the most important thing to her was that Smith gets the help that he needs for his substance abuse problem.
"I can tell you this ... Aldon called my parents and asked them to take him to rehab," she told TMZ. "He complied. They went and got him. I was not there. My family took him and had him checked in. I wish the BEST for Aldon. And I'm scared for his life with his addiction. I cannot comment on the altercation, but I can tell you I love him and so happy he turned to my family who considers him family and, hopefully, he gets the help he truly needs."
Update: The Raiders officially released Smith on Monday.
Smith's future looked bright after being drafted by the 49ers with the seventh-overall pick in 2011. Since then, he has made a series of poor decisions and been in trouble several times, which eventually led to his suspension from the NFL.
Smith has been arrested three times for driving under the influence, including a hit-and-run, been charged with three felony counts of possessing illegal assault weapons, and the incident at Los Angeles International Airport when he was arrested for making a false bomb threat.
Following his release from the 49ers in 2015, Smith signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders. The NFL went on to issue Smith a one-year suspension due to the hit-and-run incident in August of 2015 that led to his release from the 49ers. He remains suspended by the league.
Smith was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, which is the same year he made the Pro Bowl and was named first-team All-Pro. He has 47.5 career sacks.
