All rookie contracts are now for a length of four years. Only first-round selections come with an option for a fifth year, which, for the 49ers, only applies to tackle Mike McGlinchey. If they choose to do so, NFL teams must activate the player's fifth-year option before the fourth and final year of the rookie deal. For example, the 49ers will need to make a decision on the fifth-year options of defensive end Arik Armstead and guard Laken Tomlinson by May 3 or each could become a free agent in 2019. Even though the 49ers didn't draft Tomlinson, he is still playing on his rookie contract.
Having set numbers for each spot eliminates the need to negotiate salaries and only leaves items like bonus payment terms, roster bonus allocations, and other miscellaneous structural items. It's those extra items that can stall an agreement, as exhibited by defensive lineman Solomon Thomas' late signing last year.
The 49ers will have a rookie pool of $8,622,886 in 2018, or very close to that amount, according to OverTheCap.com's estimations.
