"There's a lot going on," James told Al Sacco and Zain Naqvi when asked about the difficulty of learning the playbook. "It's very detailed."
James hopes a couple of veterans on the team will speed up his NFL education. On offense, he can't wait to learn from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
"He's a competitor," James said. "He wants to win. You've got to learn from him. He's going to teach you some things that you didn't know."
He's also excited to go against cornerback Richard Sherman in practices and learn from the veteran, who is entering his eighth NFL season.
"I get to work with one of the best," James said. "Just having the opportunity to go against Richard Sherman is going to be -- really a learning experience, but it's going to be competitive. When you go against him, you've got to be able to compete because that's what he does. He's going to try to get into your head, and he's going to try to get you off your game."
The confident James has high hopes for himself and his new team in 2018.
"I love to win, and there's no other place I'd rather be right now than with the 49ers because they love to win," James continued. "It's a team game so we're going to be the best we can possibly be and hopefully get that Super Bowl at the end of the year."
