Reed spent the 2017 season on the practice squads of the Seattle Seahawks and then the 49ers after being waived by the Los Angeles Chargers on September 2. San Francisco signed him to a futures contract in January.
Reed entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams in August of 2015, with which he spent a month before being released and then signed to the team's practice squad. He also spent time on the Miami Dolphins' and Seahawks' practice squads in 2015.
Following Seattle's training camp the next year, Reed was waived and then joined the Chargers practice squad on October 26, 2016. He was promoted to the active roster on November 22, 2016, and appeared in the Chargers' final six games of the season with one start. During those six games, he had eight tackles, three passes defensed, and two interceptions.
