Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, whose Jaguars gave up 242 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown to Garoppolo, was unimpressed by the 49ers quarterback's performance when San Francisco beat Jacksonville 44-33 last year.
"What did he play, five games? He has good potential, I think he'll be a good player, but my experience in playing him, it was a lot of scheme stuff. It wasn't like he was just dicing us up," Ramsey said on NFL Network according to Pro Football Talk.
Garoppolo completed 120-of-178 pass attempts for 1,560 yards, seven touchdowns, five interceptions, a passer rating of 96.2, and the already mentioned rushing touchdown during his five starts and six game appearances with the 49ers last year. While he won each of those five starts, Ramsey believes it had more to do with NFL teams not having much to reference.
"Nobody got to scheme on him this year," Ramsey said. "There was not a lot of film on him."
"Ramsey said on NFL Network that his fellow players were wrong to put Garoppolo in the Top 100 players in the NFL, as Ramsey didn't come away thinking Garoppolo was great," wrote Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
Ramsey's comments about Garoppolo somewhat mirror the tone from what he said following the Week 16 matchup between his Jaguars and the 49ers. He did not directly compliment Garoppolo and instead said the quarterback played well within the 49ers' system.
"He's very good for their system," Ramsey said following the loss. "They found the right quarterback to go with their system ... They really executed well today. What they did today against us is what they did. They looked good."
