Goodwin finished last season, his first with the 49ers, with 56 receptions for 962 yards with two touchdowns. The 49ers originally signed him to a two-year deal on March 10, 2017, and he was rewarded with a three-year contract extension through the 2021 season on March 8, 2018.
Goodwin was named the winner of the 49ers' prestigious Len Eshmont Award, which is presented annually to the 49ers player who best exemplified the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont. He was also named the 2018 George Halas Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America, which is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes the most adversity to succeed.
Hours before the start of the 49ers' Week 10 matchup against the New York Giants, Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, lost their infant son due to complications which led to premature delivery. Morgan encouraged her husband to play in the upcoming game. Goodwin caught an early pass for an 83-yard touchdown against the Giants, which set the tone for the 49ers' first victory of the season.
Then, just days before a Week 15 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, Goodwin had to deal with the loss of his biological father. He went on to register a season-high 10 receptions for 114 yards against Tennessee.
In August of 2017, the 49ers shared a touching moment between Goodwin and 49ers fan Austin DeMello, who visited with the team during a practice as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"You know, I've got a sister who never walked a day in her life," Goodwin told DeMello. "She's in a wheelchair her whole life. She's still smiling, still enjoying life. You can too."
