San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Max McCaffrey is likely heading to injured reserve after having Jones fracture surgery, according to a report by Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group and posts to the player's Instagram account.

McCaffrey sustained the foot injury before preseason and has been out since.

The 49ers signed McCaffrey to a two-year deal after claiming him from the Green Bay Packers' practice squad on December 13, 2017. He initially joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders on May 10, 2016.

McCaffrey was briefly on the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints in 2017 before being signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars' active roster, where he appeared in five games and caught one pass for four yards before re-joining the Packers practice squad.

Max McCaffrey is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who spent 13 seasons in the league (including 1994 with the 49ers). His younger brother, Christian, is a running back with the Carolina Panthers.
