Obviously, that means Garoppolo will get an MRI on Monday after the team returns to the Bay Area and his season is likely over, depending on the results.
Garoppolo was injured on a 3rd-and-20 play while scrambling to his left late in the fourth quarter and colliding with Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson. He gained 13 yards on the play and was carted to the locker room after being examined by the 49ers medical staff.
Garoppolo was 20-of-30 for 251 yards with two touchdowns before exiting the game. He has passed for 718 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
San Francisco lost the game 38-27 in Kansas City and fell to 1-2 on the season. Second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard is Garoppolo's backup.
"I'm going to be praying for him and, hopefully, he can recover and heal up as quickly as possible," Beathard told reporters after the game.
It sounds like Garoppolo also fears the worst.
"He told me to lead these guys," Beathard added.
"Obviously, I feel for him, personally," Shanahan continued. "I know how disappointed he is. I haven't had a chance to see him yet but I feel for him."
Shanahan provided the following injury updates on other players.
- Cornerback Richard Sherman suffered a calf injury. He was seen leaving the locker room with his left foot in a walking boot.
- Safety Adrian Colbert injured his hip.
- Guard Mike Person injured his foot but returned to the game.
- Linebacker Reuben Foster sustained an abdominal injury but returned to the game.
- Running back Matt Breida hurt his knee but returned.
