It was initially estimated that the San Francisco 49ers would be without Richard Sherman for a couple of weeks following his calf injury in Kansas City on September 23. The veteran cornerback missed this past Sunday's road game against the Los Angeles Chargers but hasn't ruled himself out for this weekend's home matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Sherman didn't practice on Wednesday but was paired with wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who is nursing a hamstring and quadricep injury, in rehab drills. Sherman told reporters on Thursday that he is feeling good.

"I've been off for a while," he said. "Fresh legs program."

The assumption was that Sherman would miss Sunday's game as he continues to recover. That's news to him because he is working to get back on the football field.

"It's not the case in my eyes," Sherman said. "I'm practicing today. We'll see how it goes from there."

The 49ers could use a healthy Sherman. The team has been devasted by injuries this season and faces a rookie quarterback in Josh Rosen on Sunday. The ability to lock down one side of the football field would be a significant benefit to whoever starts opposite Sherman, which could be Greg Mabin or Ahkello Witherspoon.

Sherman's status for Sunday might become more evident on Friday when the 49ers release their game status and practice participation report.

The 49ers and Cardinals kick off at 1:25 p.m. on Sunday from Levi's Stadium.
