It sounds like the San Francisco 49ers will have a key player back on defense when the team faces the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman is expected to play, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The news follows a report from Saturday night that running back Matt Breida is also expected to play.

Sherman is returning from a calf injury sustained in Kansas City on September 23. He missed this past Sunday's road game against the Los Angeles Chargers but was able to return to practice on Thursday. Sherman says the time off has had benefits outside of his recovery.

"I've been off for a while," Sherman told reporters before Thursday's practice. "Fresh legs program."

Sherman was one of two defensive backs listed as questionable on Friday's injury report. The other is Jimmie Ward, who once again injured his hamstring during Thursday's practice.

"He's had a history with it," Shanahan said on Friday. "He didn't practice today (Friday). We'll see how it feels on Sunday."
