Head coach Kyle Shanahan is scheduled to jump on a conference call with reporters on Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT and will likely be asked about the signing.
Update: Shanahan confirmed that Savage was signed and the 49ers waived tight end Cole Wick to make room on the 53-man roster. San Francisco also released offensive lineman Zack Golditch from the team's practice squad, according to an official press release issued by the team.
The move comes over three weeks after quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. He had knee surgery to repair the damage on October 3. Second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard has started since the injury.

Savage is expected to be the 49ers' third quarterback, adding a veteran presence for Beathard and fellow second-year player Nick Mullens. News of Savage's expected signing was first reported on Monday by Schultz.
The Texans made Savage a fourth-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh in 2014. He missed the 2015 season with a shoulder injury but started nine games over the next two seasons. Savage's best season came last year when he completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,412 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions.
While Savage opened 2017 as the starter, he was benched during Week 1 in favor of then-rookie Deshaun Watson. The majority of Savage's playing time came after Watson's season-ending ACL injury before Savage suffered a season-ending concussion during a Week 14 matchup against the 49ers.
Savage spent the offseason with the New Orleans Saints before being released on September 1.
