The San Francisco 49ers have placed safety Adrian Colbert on injured reserve, likely ending his season. He suffered a high-ankle sprain during Sunday's 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Levi's Stadium. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that the injury will require six to eight weeks of recovery.

The 49ers are filling the vacant roster spot by re-signing quarterback Tom Savage, whom the team waived on Saturday.

Colbert's injury occurred during the third quarter of play when he and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon both attempted to haul in a pass thrown by Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Colbert landed awkwardly on his right leg and was carted off the field after a good deal of time on the ground.

Rookie D.J. Reed replaced Colbert at free safety after the injury.

Colbert had 21 combined tackles and a pass defensed this season — his second in the NFL.
