Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 23.
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Thursday evening and provided an update on his quarterback.
49ers players are enjoying some much-needed time off during the team's bye week. Lynch was cleaning out his office on Wednesday and saw his recovering quarterback.
When the media last spoke to Garoppolo on October 26, he was still on two crutches. Later, he was seen getting around with a single crutch.
"Yesterday, I came in, and he was walking, and I was like, 'Wow,'" Lynch said on the "Tolbert & Lund" show. "That's progress, and that's exciting. [Garoppolo and running back Jerick McKinnon are] both working extremely hard."
McKinnon suffered the same injury during practice on September 1, so Garoppolo is just a few weeks behind his teammate in the rehab process. Both are expected to be healthy for next season.
"I think Jimmy's doing a great job, as is Jerick, about being around their teammates," Lynch continued. "It was pointed out to me from a former general manager that why wasn't he down there with his team? Just so everyone knows, he wasn't cleared to be down there. He can't move well enough to protect himself, and I'd have a heart attack if he were.
"He was exactly where he was supposed to be."
The comment Lynch referenced was the following one from former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan.
