Why was Shanahan so upset? Sure, he was already agitated by the questionable officiating during the game, but Russell Wilson did not help matters. The coach shared what the television cameras failed to catch during the offsides call that preceded the outburst.
"Fred Warner lost his shoe," Shanahan explained. "He was going to pick it up. When he went to pick it up, Russell grabbed it and threw it. So he had to go about eight more yards to pick it up, and as he was doing that, [Seattle] went hurry-up offense. So we had a guy 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage trying to get his shoe that was thrown out of the way.
"They were at the line. Fred was going to be offsides because he was picking up his shoe that was thrown. When he saw that, [linebacker Elijah Lee] tried to help him out and run on the field so he could get off. That's why we got the penalty."
Shanahan went on to call that penalty the "icing on the cake" and the "tipping point" for him.
"It was definitely a number of other ones from earlier that was a build up," he added.
Shanahan made it a point to state that he doesn't know if Wilson's actions were malicious but that it created an unusual situation.
