Right guard Mike Person is the only 49ers starting offensive lineman scheduled to become a free agent in March. San Francisco might look to improve this offseason along the interior of the offensive line.
The 49ers feared the worst when left guard Laken Tomlinson went down with a knee injury during the team's Week 17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The injury, however, was revealed to be a torn MCL rather than a torn ACL, the latter of which would have required about five or six more months of recovery.
Center Weston Richburg may not have seemingly lived up to the five-year, $47.5 million deal he signed last March, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is convinced the 49ers have their center of the future.
"I know that I'm happy with him," Shanahan said of Richburg in late-December. "Doesn't mean that there's not room to grow. I think he could play better, too, especially the way he started out the year. We've got to find out a way to make that last throughout the whole year. I think we've got a very good center who is only going to get better."
San Francisco sees 2018 draft pick and right tackle Mike McGlinchey as veteran left tackle Joe Staley's eventual replacement. Staley has committed to playing in 2019, which happens to be the final year of his contract with the 49ers. McGlinchey had a solid rookie campaign with his strength being as a run blocker but knows there is room for improvement.
"There's definitely some things that I did well this season that I will take and continue to try to improve on," McGlinchey told reporters on December 31. "There's things I didn't do well this season that I need to get corrected and need to take a huge step forward in year two."
