The San Francisco 49ers lost another assistant coach on Friday, as the Green Bay Packers hired Adam Stenavich to be the team's new offensive line coach under head coach Matt LaFleur.
For a four-win football team that owns the second overall selection in the upcoming 2019 NFL Draft, members of the San Francisco 49ers' coaching staff continue to be surprisingly hot commodities. Two days after the Denver Broncos officially hired former 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello as their new offensive coordinator, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported San Francisco's former assistant offensive line coach Adam Stenavich will be the Green Bay Packers' new offensive line coach in 2019:
Adam Stenavich, who grew up near Green Bay in Marshfield, WI, has a history with the Packers. The former college offensive lineman spent time on Green Bay's practice squad before he was released from the team in 2007. Stenavich joined the coaching ranks at the college level in 2011, until the 49ers gave the college offensive line coach his first NFL coaching job in 2017.
During his two years with the team, Stenavich worked under San Francisco's offensive line coach John Benton after head coach Kyle Shanahan hired Brenton in 2017 based on the relationship the two developed during their four years together on the Houston Texans' coaching staff. Once Benton joined the 49ers, he and Shanahan quickly added Stenavich to the coaching staff as the team's assistant offensive line coach.
Although Green Bay closed the deal today, the Packers weren't Stenavich's only suitors. Earlier this afternoon, reports from the New York Daily News claimed the New York Jets were also interested in promoting San Francisco's former assistant coach to an offensive line coaching position.
The 49ers continue to lose members of their coaching staff, which will cause some short-term challenges for Shanahan, general manager John Lynch and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. But the fact that fellow teams continue to snipe Niner assistants tells us the NFL recognizes the San Francisco 49ers' coaching staff is full of talent, despite the team's lackluster record over the past two seasons.
