Austin, best known for his time with the Dallas Cowboys, spent 10 seasons in the NFL. His career included a stop with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator there.
The Cowboys signed Austin as an undrafted free agent out of Monmouth in 2006 and he spent eight seasons in Dallas before a year in Cleveland and another with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Austin, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, registered 361 receptions for 5,273 yards with 37 touchdowns during his 10 NFL seasons. The Cowboys hired him as a part-time scout in 2016 where he reportedly spent his time evaluating receivers and defensive backs.
It was reported on Tuesday that the 49ers are hiring another former NFL receiver, Wes Welker, to serve as the team's wide receivers coach.
