Schefter asked, "If we were going to write a book on the 49ers' offseason, what would we put in there about what we'd like to do to make this team better?"
Lynch went on to describe the philosophy behind the roster rebuild he and head coach Kyle Shanahan embarked on when they took the team over in 2017.
"If we were going to write that book, I think despite the fact that we've only won 10 games, I think we understand, Kyle and myself and everybody, the leadership of our team from Jed (York) on down, that this is a production-based business," Lynch told Schefter. "We've won 10 games in two years, but also, we're kind of proud of what we're building. I think we're bringing in the type of guys — we talk about culture early on, and Kyle, I thought, had a tremendous definition. He said, 'Culture is the people you surround yourself with.'
That's culture to me, so we've really tried to identify what kind of players we want to bring in. We talk about the talent and spirit that they embody, and I think we brought a lot of guys in that fit that mold. I think we continue to do more of that. We have a little saying: Brick by brick. We want to keep adding those bricks and get some dynamic, explosive players but continuing to add the quality people that are going to make us who we think we're going to be."
The 49ers enter free agency with nearly $66 million in salary cap space and a number of roster holes to fill. The team is expected to try to address defensive positions like edge rusher and safety. San Francisco owns just six selections in next month's draft.
NFL teams were able to begin negotiating with player agents of impending free agents at 9 a.m. PT on Monday and can officially sign those players on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT.
