Malcolm Smith's restructured 49ers contract becomes a one-year deal

Linebacker Malcolm Smith, who was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first free agent haul, was in danger of no longer being on the San Francisco 49ers roster in 2019. He wisely agreed to a restructured contract to remain with the team for at least one more season.

The 49ers initially signed Smith to a five-year deal on March 9, 2017 worth up to $26.5 million. He was due $3.75 million in 2019 but his salary increases from year to year peaking at $4.85 million in 2021 and counting $6.55 million against the salary cap in that final year.

We now have some details on that restructured deal, which essentially becomes a one-year deal, courtesy of OverTheCap.com and via Nick Wagoner of ESPN. The remaining years on the contract will void on March 17.
