The Minnesota Vikings made Exum a sixth-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech in 2014. He spent four seasons — one of which was on injured reserve — in Minnesota before signing with San Francisco on November 7, 2017.
Injuries this past season thrust Exum into a starting role. He registered a career-high 40 combined tackles, seven passes defensed, a forced fumble, his first career sack, and first career interception.
The interception, which Exum returned for a touchdown, came off of a pass from Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers during Week 4. It was one of just two interceptions hauled in by the 49ers defense in 2018. The unit set new NFL records for both the fewest interceptions and fewest takeaways (7) in a single season.
