Thompkins did not receive an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine in February. He did, however, reportedly run a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at Penn State's pro day. A similar number at the Combine would have tied for the third-best speed among wide receivers right there with top prospect D.K. Metcalf of Mississippi and Mecole Hardman of Georgia.
Thompkins knows that his ability to stand out on special teams could lead to a productive NFL career. He was the Nittany Lions' punt returner the last two seasons and returned two for scores during that time.
"The more versatile you are, the more they like you, the more places they can put you," Thompson recently said via Penn State's official newspaper. "I think [teams] really take that into consideration that I'm a return man."
Thompkins (5-11, 188) caught 80 passes for 1,212 yards with six touchdowns through 35 games during his final three seasons with Penn State.
