The first-overall pick is of significant importance. It will shape how the rest of the round plays out, particularly for the San Francisco 49ers, who own the No. 2 overall pick. There were rumors over the weekend that the Arizona Cardinals might consider passing on former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, the player they have long been expected to select at No. 1.
McShay acknowledges the rumors and one NFL general manager seemed less confident now of a Murray-to-Arizona scenario, but the analyst is sticking with the pick until he receives more concrete information.
As for the 49ers, McShay sees three options, including a potential trade out of the No. 2 spot.
"The Niners either draft Ohio State DE Nick Bosa, draft Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen or move back and take advantage of the depth of this draft class," writes McShay. "Edge is a glaring need for San Francisco, and there's a good chance the best pass-rusher -- and player overall -- in Bosa will be on the board at No. 2."
It's surprising that former Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams isn't on the list of McShay's options. It might mean he doesn't see the Crimson Tide product as a legitimate option for the 49ers.
The 2019 NFL Draft kicks off in three days. That's when all the rumors and smokescreens will be put to rest.
