The San Francisco 49ers opened up their rookie minicamp with a Friday-afternoon practice and the No. 2 overall pick, defensive end Nick Bosa, was on the field for the first time.

The 49ers drafted Bosa to help bolster a defensive front that managed just 37 combined quarterback sacks, which tied for No. 22 in the NFL. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner alone accounted for 12 of those sacks.

San Francisco also traded for pass rusher Dee Ford in March. He racked up a career-high 13 sacks for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018.

Bosa managed to accumulate 12.5 sacks through 17 games from 2017 and 2018. Last year was cut short by a core muscle injury suffered during the Buckeye's third game of the season. Bosa still managed at least one sack during each of those three games and got to the quarterback at least once in each of his past six collegiate games.

Bosa took part in everything except 11-on-11 drills on Friday. The coaching staff wants to ease him back after he missed most of his final season at Ohio State.

The 49ers announced the signings of five draft picks on Friday in addition to the earlier signing of punter Mitch Wishnowsky. That leaves Bosa and second-round draft pick Deebo Samuel, the wide receiver out of South Carolina, as the only unsigned rookies from the team's 2019 draft class.
