Update: Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Foster is believed to have suffered a torn ACL, plus additional damage. His season is over.
Team reporters on the scene said trainers were looking at Foster's left leg as the linebacker was sobbing in pain. An air cast was used to immobilize the leg as Foster was transported to the team's facility. Below is a video from NBC Sports Washington.
Washington's decision-makers took a lot of criticism for claiming Foster after the 49ers waived him following his latest domestic violence accusations. Those charges were later dismissed. While the NFL didn't suspend Foster, the league did fine him two game checks.
"I am grateful to the Washington Redskins and the NFL for giving me this second chance," Foster said via a statement in April. "I appreciate the support I have received from the league, my team, and my union to help me succeed."
The 49ers brought in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander to replace foster on defense. The team signed him to a four-year deal worth up to $54 million.
"There was a huge void there," general manager John Lynch said in March. "We had drafted Reuben in our first draft thinking, 'Wow, this is the answer right here,' at an extremely important position in our scheme ... Things didn't work out, and so you have to own that, and then move forward. We had a void there, and we needed to fill it."
The 49ers are scheduled to play Washington at FedExField on October 20.
