The signing comes after San Francisco worked out free agent cornerback Kayvon Webster on Tuesday morning.
The 49ers made Johnson a fourth-round selection out of NC State in 2014. Johnson, 27, has recorded 158 combined tackles, 21 passes defensed, two interceptions, and two touchdowns through his five NFL seasons.
Johnson started all 16 games for San Francisco in 2017. He registered 77 combined tackles, an interception, and seven passes defensed during that last year with the team. The 49ers did not attempt to re-sign Johnson following the 2017 season when he finished the year as the team's worst-graded defensive back, according to Pro Football Focus.
Johnson has since tried to catch on with the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in one game, a Week 7 matchup while with Buffalo, last year.
The Seahawks hoped to make Johnson one of their starting cornerbacks in 2018, but a groin injury landed him on injured reserve and Seattle released him on September 27, 2018.
Most recently, the Chiefs signed Johnson, but he only lasted three months with the team before being released.
The 49ers made Taumoepenu a sixth-round selection out of Utah in 2017. He registered three combined tackles through four games with the 49ers in 2018.
