The other NFL players nominated for the same award are Chicago Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara, now-retired Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long, New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, and Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle (for his time in Baltimore).
Staley is entering his 13th NFL season and started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2018. He has been a 16-game starter during six of the past eight NFL seasons and is entering the final year of his contract.
General manager John Lynch said in April that he hopes Staley finishes his career in San Francisco.
"He's got a unique opportunity to be part of this organization, and my hope is that he only plays for one organization," Lynch said. "I think he's a special player. He's a special personality. I'm not going to get into the specifics of the contract and where we're going on all that. I'll just tell you that my hope, that Kyle's (Shanahan) hope, that everyone associated that is involved in these decisions, is that Joe never plays anywhere else but the San Francisco 49ers. We're very pleased with Joe Staley and the way he's playing."
Also up for an award is the late, great 49ers offensive line coach, Bobb McKittrick, who is nominated for the "Dr. Z" Zimmerman Award — a lifetime achievement award presented to an NFL assistant coach. The winners (there will be two) of that award will be announced on Monday, June 10.
