The San Francisco 49ers received more good news on Wednesday night. Just minutes after Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that an MRI revealed rookie defensive end Nick Bosa suffered and ankle sprain during practice, he reported that cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a similar injury.

While not ideal, the injuries aren't considered to be serious.


Verrett's injury during practice came as he tackled running back Raheem Mostert in the open field.

The 49ers signed Verrett to a one-year deal on March 14. Injuries have plagued the cornerback during his five NFL seasons. He has landed on injured reserve in four of those years.


Verrett's one healthy season came in 2015 and resulted in a Pro Bowl selection.

"Getting a guy like Jason Verrett, his upside is huge," head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week. "He has that ability, and to get him here in this situation is great for us. I think he will be healthy here. He's put in all the work, and I'm really pulling for him."

The Chargers used the No. 25 overall pick to select Verrett out of Texas Christian in 2014. He has recorded 80 combined tackles, 19 passes defensed, five interceptions, and a touchdown during his NFL career.

"Verrett, he looks really sharp," defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said this past weekend. "He had a really nice play yesterday, showed great patience on Marquise Goodwin, which is very hard to do when he's screaming up the field. His foot quickness and speed and all that is right there, so I like the progress he's going into or he's showing."
