The 25-year-old Colbert has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the 49ers' preseason game against the Denver Broncos on August 19 and re-aggravated it on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury could allow Colbert to clear waivers without being claimed by another team. He could return to the 49ers in some capacity.
The 49ers made Colbert a seventh-round selection out of Miami (FL) in 2017. He registered 21 combined tackles and a pass defensed through seven games and six starts with the 49ers in 2018 but his season came to an end due to a high-ankle sprain. The safety was placed on injured reserve on October 22, 2018.
Colbert has recorded 58 combined tackles, six passes defensed, and two forced fumbles through his two NFL seasons.
