To make room on the roster, the 49ers waived rookie tight end Kaden Smith, a sixth-round pick in April's draft.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday that the plan is to get Coleman back after the 49ers' bye week but he remains hopeful that the September 22 home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers is a possibility.
The 49ers initially signed Wilson as an undrafted free agent out of North Texas in 2018. He carried the football 66 times for 266 yards with no rushing touchdowns while adding 12 receptions for 98 yards through six games and two starts with the 49ers in 2018.
Wilson had an impressive game in San Francisco's preseason finale on August 29 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He carried the football 20 times for 100 yards with a touchdown in the matchup, but it wasn't enough to make the initial 53-player roster. Wilson was waived on August 31 and then signed to the practice squad the next day.
Wilson finished the preseason with 41 carries for 178 yards with four touchdowns and added two receptions for 16 yards through three games.
