The San Francisco 49ers waived the first of their three sixth-round draft picks in April, tight end Kaden Smith, on Saturday to promote running back Jeff Wilson from the practice squad. It's likely the 49ers hoped to have Smith replace Wilson on the practice squad.

That won't happen now.

The New York Giants have claimed Smith after waiving running back Paul Perkins, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

The 6-foot-5 and 255-pound Smith caught 47 passes for 635 yards with two touchdowns as a junior at Stanford in 2018. He registered 70 receptions for 1,049 yards with seven touchdowns over the past two seasons with the Cardinal.

Smith caught four passes for 44 yards in four appearances with the 49ers during the preseason.
