The San Francisco 49ers' starting cornerback situation is less of a question mark than it was just a few weeks ago. Richard Sherman is Richard Sherman. Ahkello Witherspoon looks like the player the 49ers hoped him to be after drafting him in the third round two years ago.
Still, there is no doubt that a player like Ramsey would instantly improve San Francisco's roster.
Peter King of NBC Sports joined 95.7 The Game on Tuesday and explained why he believes Ramsey could be a game-changing cornerback for an interested NFL team.
"Whoever gets Jalen Ramsey, in my opinion, is going to be a win or two better than they would have been (without him)," King told Damon Bruce, Ray Ratto, and Matt Kolsky. "I think he's that good, and I think he's that much of a difference-maker."
Does King think the 49ers should entertain the idea of sacrificing high draft picks for the two-time Pro Bowl selection?
Yes.
And maybe no.
"I would first have to know, if they were going to chase Jalen Ramsey, you have to really do some fact-finding on Jalen Ramsey because, at times, he has been a disruptive guy," King explained. "If you trade for him, it's probably going to cost you something in the vicinity of, at best, a [first-round pick] and a two, and maybe two ones.
"So if you're going to make that trade, you have to know that you're going to sign him long-term. And if you're going to sign him long-term, you don't want to have a guy who's going to be a jerk on your team."
King admits that he doesn't really know Ramsey well outside of a conversation he had with the cornerback during training camp. Ramsey's success with a new NFL team will depend on the culture there and if it can handle a player like him.
"I'd be comfortable with Kyle Shanahan handling him," Kind added. "But again, you have to look at the young guys on your team, and you have to look at all the players who you have to sign, who you think are going to be core players for you, who you want to sign long-term. And then you have to ask yourself, 'Are we comfortable with Jalen Ramsey making 18 or 20 million a year, and what that's going to do to our cap management?'"
