The 49ers also signed wide receiver Chris Thompson to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Will Holden from the practice squad.
McLaughlin was signed to a one-year deal on November 7 after kicker Robbie Gould suffered a strained quadricep during a practice leading to San Francisco's Week 10 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
McLaughlin entered the league this year as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills, who waived him on August 31. He spent a brief time on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers on October 1 and then being waived on October 29.
The rookie kicker connected on seven of his eight field-goal attempts this season through three games with his only miss coming in overtime against the Seahawks. He connected on all eight of his extra-point attempts.
San Francisco signed Holden to the practice squad on October 3.
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following information about Thompson.
Thompson (6-0, 175) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent on May 16, 2017. He was waived by Houston on September 2, 2017, and signed to the team's practice squad the following day. He was promoted to the Texans active roster on September 27, 2017, and went on to appear in 13 games and register five receptions for 84 yards in addition to six tackles on special teams. In 2018, he spent the majority of training camp with the Texans prior to being waived on August 28. He previously signed with the 49ers on August 3, 2019, was waived on August 9, then later re-signed with the team on August 21 prior to being released from the team on August 31.
