The move comes after Richard Sherman suffered a hamstring strain on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers' starting cornerback is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, making his earliest possible return in time for the team's Week 17 matchup against his former squad, the Seattle Seahawks.
Another 49ers cornerback, K'Waun Williams, is also dealing with an injury from the Saints game. He is in the concussion protocol.
The 49ers made Johnson a fourth-round selection out of NC State in 2014, and he remained with the team through the 2017 season. Johnson spent last year with the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, and Arizona Cardinals. He rejoined San Francisco on May 28, 2019, after a brief offseason stop with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Johnson was released as part of the roster cuts on August 30. The 49ers brought him back on October 3 only to waive him again on November 11.
Johnson has appeared in seven games this season between his time with the 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers. All three of his tackles this year have come with San Francisco.
