A new report, this time by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, states that the 49ers are "making significant headway" on getting that deal done, in the hopes of avoiding using the franchise tag on the team's sack leader from this past season. The deadline to apply the franchise tag is Monday at 9 a.m. PT.
As mentioned, Armstead racked up a team-high 10 regular-season sacks in 2019. The 26-year-old defensive lineman added two more in postseason play.
Armstead, 26, was the No. 17 overall pick by the 49ers in 2015 after playing college football at Oregon. He registered 54 combined tackles, two passes defensed, and two forced fumbles to go along with his 10 sacks through 16 starts while playing on his fifth-year option.
Armstead has registered 152 combined tackles, 19 sacks, three passes defensed, and three forced fumbles through his five NFL seasons.
