It sounds like that will be after the 2023 season. And Sherman hopes to continue playing for the 49ers.
"I do believe that I have good years left in me," Sherman told reporters after Thursday's practice. "I'm only going to play three after this. That's what the wife (Ashley) told me. I don't call any shots after that.
"Three years after this, if the good San Francisco 49ers would love to keep me on this ball club, I'd love to be here. But after that, I'm going to go into the booth."
Sherman is entering his 10th NFL season and is still playing at a high level. The veteran defender was named to the Pro Bowl last season, and he was Pro Football Focus' highest-graded qualifying cornerback in 2019.
Sherman also provided an update on where things stand between him and the 49ers when it comes to a potential contract extension. He is preparing to play in the final year of the initial three-year deal he signed with the team in 2018.
"In terms of my negotiations with the Niners, we've had talks, but obviously, when you're representing yourself, you have to kind of focus on the season when the season comes," Sherman said. "If anything changes throughout that, I'm sure they'll be the first to let you guys know."
