The defender shared that he used to follow the then-Oakland Raiders growing up, mostly because of his fondness for quarterback Rich Gannon. That ended when the Raiders lost Super Bowl XXXVII to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though.
"When [Gannon] lost the Super Bowl, I jumped ship and was heartbroken," wrote Witherspoon. "I gave up rooting for all other teams after that. From that day forward, I stopped rooting for teams. I just like good ball in every sport. I'm not a team guy because I don't like the emotional rollercoaster of rooting for someone."
The 49ers eventually drafted Witherspoon in 2017. A year later, he became teammates with one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game — Richard Sherman.
One fan asked Witherspoon what the best advice was that Sherman ever offered to him.
"Trust myself," Witherspoon responded. "I have the gifts, abilities and the mind, but just trust and believe in everything about me."
Witherspoon didn't play on Sunday against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. He did, however, play the week before on that same field against the New York Jets and was asked if the stadium turf is as bad as players have been stating.
Needless to say, Witherspoon, like many others, is not a fan of the field conditions.
"The worst turf I played on, 100%," he wrote. "It was super thick. There were those little rubber pellets everywhere. It felt like some thick and tall grass got converted to turf. Usually, turf is thin and fast, but this was real sticky."
