In Garoppolo's defense, he had missed two games after suffering a high-ankle sprain during Week 2, and the injury was clearly impacting his ability to throw the football and move around. Garoppolo probably shouldn't have been playing in the first place, a debate that emerged after the Dolphins routed the 49ers 43-17.
While the media has resumed speculating how to replace the 49ers quarterback, Garoppolo's teammates still have confidence in his ability to lead the team from the NFC West basement.
Three quarterbacks — Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, and C.J. Beathard — have earned playing time this season. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk joined KNBR on Wednesday and discussed the 49ers' quarterback situation.
"It's never a good thing to not have continuity at the quarterback position," Juszczyk said. "Hopefully, you have one guy who's playing that position for you all year. The one positive that I'll say is each and every one of these guys are very capable starting quarterbacks in the NFL. They all have their strengths, but they can all go out there, and they can win. That's what's most important, is they can win."
Garoppolo could start again on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. How he looks this week in practice will determine whether or not that happens. Garoppolo was a full participant during Wednesday's practice.
"We're definitely looking forward to Jimmy getting healthier so he can move around a little bit better, he can drive the ball a little bit better," Juszczyk continued. "But talking to him right after the game, he told me there were no setbacks, that he was sore from the game, but he didn't feel like the healing process was slowed down at all in the long run.
"I think as soon as he can have the confidence in that ankle, we're going to get back to the Jimmy that we know, and he's going to lead this offense."
