The San Francisco 49ers plan to sign a quarterback next week, according to analyst Andrea Kremer.

"I will tell you that (VP of player personnel) Adam Peters mentioned to me yesterday that the Niners plan to sign Josh Johnson next week for additional depth at the quarterback position," Kremer said Friday morning on 95.7 The Game.

Johnson is 34 years old and had a couple of stints with the 49ers. He spent the 2012 offseason with the team and was on and off the roster in 2014. His last team was the Los Angeles Wildcats of the now-defunct XFL.

On Thursday, the 49ers placed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain. Nick Mullens started on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers. The team also has former third-round pick C.J. Beathard.

Johnson last played in the NFL during the 2018 season with Washington when he was 52-of-91 for 590 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions through four games and three starts.
