That's analytics for you. Shanahan doesn't really concern himself with computers trying to tell him what is likely or unlikely to occur. The coach joined KNBR on Wednesday and was asked if hearing his team's slim chances of reaching postseason play is disheartening.
"The analytics doesn't bum me out," Shanahan responded on the Murph & Mac show.
The 49ers coach has a different way of looking at the situation. The NFL season, especially this one, is unpredictable, after all.
"I try to go off when you look at your schedule, you look at your team, and do you feel you have a chance to compete in every game?" Shanahan continued. "I thought we played a lot better football, just on all three phases, Sunday versus a real good team. Unfortunately, when you turned the ball over four times like that, I don't really care who's out there, it gives you a hard chance to win.
"But I think we're getting a number of guys back that I know will help us. And I also think the guys that have been playing really started to take a step in the right direction."
Shanahan remains hopeful that several reinforcements will be available for the 49ers' next game — a Week 12 road matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Those include names like Raheem Mostert, Richard Sherman, Deebo Samuel, and Tevin Coleman.
"If we can use this bye week to help us get healthier," Shanahan continued, "we can come back and play a little bit better football from it because I do feel we've got the guys in our building, and some guys coming back. That does give us a chance in every game."
