Safety Jimmie Ward was fined $15,000 for unnecessary roughness on his hit on Saints wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith, who suffered a concussion.
The league also fined linebacker Fred Warner $6,450 for his grab at the face mask of wide receiver Deonte Harris.
The good news is that the NFL didn't fine defensive end Kentavius Street for what should have been credited as a sack against Saints quarterback Drew Brees. The hit ended up knocking Brees out of the game, and the quarterback was later diagnosed with a collapsed lung and fractured ribs. Instead of earning his first NFL sack, Street was flagged with a roughing-the-passer penalty.
On Friday, the Saints placed Brees on injured reserve, and the quarterback will miss at least the next three games.
The lack of a fine should not come as a surprise. General manager John Lynch said on Thursday while discussing how disappointed he was that a penalty was called on the play that the league informed him that his defender would not be fined.
"That was his first career sack," Lynch said during a KNBR interview, "and it got taken from him on something that I don't think was a penalty, and I think we can all agree to that now. And to do it against a legend like Drew Brees, that stunk."
