Mayhew not being given the title of general manager means the 49ers would not be eligible to receive a compensatory third-round pick as part of the NFL's minority-hiring program and following his departure. Mayhew recently interviewed for the job but Washington hired Marty Hurney to serve as its general manager.
While it is unknown exactly what his title with Washington will be, Mayhew served as a general manager with the Detroit Lions from 2008 to 2015, helping the team reach the playoffs twice. The executive has served in other roles with both the Lions and the New York Giants.
Lynch brought in Mayhew in 2017 as a senior personal executive and promoted him to VP of player personnel in 2019.
Mayhew has ties to Washington. Before becoming an NFL executive, he was a Super Bowl-winning (Super Bowl XXVI) cornerback with the team. Mayhew also played for the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 49ers' other VP of player personnel, Adam Peters, was a finalist for the Carolina Panthers' general manager opening. However, that job went to former Seattle Seahawks VP of football operations Scott Fitterer.
