The Atlanta Falcons announced that they have hired Smith to serve as their VP of player personnel (h/t to Patrick Tulini).
Smith, 36, has overseen Washington's most recent drafts and spent 10 years with the team. The 49ers still have Adam Peters serving as the VP of player personnel. Peters had garnered some interest from the Carolina Panthers, who hired Seattle Seahawks VP of football operations Scott Fitterer as the team's new general manager.
That means 49ers general manager John Lynch was able to retain one of his top two lieutenants in Peters but couldn't lure Smith away from the competition.
