Update: On Monday, the 49ers officially announced the signing of Walter to a one-year deal.
San Francisco signed Walter as an undrafted free agent out of Rice in 2019. He was waived before the start of his rookie season.
Walter spent some time with the New York Giants before re-joining the 49ers on September 23, 2020. He had just one carry for three yards while adding one reception for 27 yards through four game appearances this past season.
Walter was scheduled to be an exclusive-rights free agent. Running backs Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon remain scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, with the latter repeatedly indicating that he has no intention of returning to the 49ers.
In January, San Francisco re-signed running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to a one-year deal.
