Wedington (6-0, 204) caught 15 passes for 157 yards through three games as a senior in 2020. Stanford alum John Lynch, the 49ers general manager, was likely already very familiar with the young receiver before the team started its draft evaluations.
As Melo touched on, Wedington had 21 kick returns for 590 yards in 2019, earning the Phil Moffatt Award for most outstanding special teams player. He added four returns for 95 yards in 2020.
"Connor Wedington demonstrates average proactive athleticism with regards to his body control," wrote Melo's The Draft Network colleague, Drae Harris. "He is quicker than he is fast and is ideally suited to play in the slot. He will catch the football on a shallow cross when contact is imminent and competes as a stalk blocker in the run game. He has some eye-opening moments catching the football where he torques his body for an extremely difficult catch. He doesn't create a ton of separation at the top of the route."
Wedington has registered 106 catches for 971 yards and a touchdown in his four seasons with the Cardinal. His best season as a receiver came as a junior in 2019 when he recorded 51 receptions for 506 yards and a score while adding a rushing touchdown.
NFL teams are allowed to conduct up to five video calls per prospect leading to the draft, and each call can last up to one hour. There is no limit to how many phone conversations NFL teams can conduct with draft-eligible players.
The 2021 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 29.
