Jori Epstein of USA Today first reported the news of the deal.
ESPN's Adam Schefter elaborated on the report, sharing some of the new deal's numbers. Prescott will sign a four-year contract reportedly worth $160 million, which includes $128 million guaranteed and a $66 million signing bonus. It can be worth up to $164 million, adds Schefter.
The $40 million per year average makes Prescott the second-highest paid player in the NFL, right behind Patrick Mahomes' $45 million average.
Prescott passed for 4,902 yards in 2019 and was on pace to surpass that mark by a significant margin in 2020 while playing on the franchise tag before suffering a compound fracture and dislocation to his right ankle and landing on injured reserve.
Prescott has earned two Pro Bowl nods. The Cowboys made him a fourth-round draft pick out of Mississippi State in 2016, and he was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after his first season.
The Cowboys quarterback was recently named by Pro Football Focus as a potentially good fit, albeit a long-shot, for the San Francisco 49ers.
"[Prescott] would be a massive upgrade at the position from Jimmy Garoppolo," wrote Seth Galina. "An intelligent, heady player with incredible touch and decision-making skills, Prescott's 85.2 grade before injury was still good enough for eighth among all quarterbacks this past season, one year after finishing 11th in 2019."
