In his defense, it is another strange pre-draft process thanks to COVID-19. He would probably remember a visit to the 49ers facility. Since those aren't allowed, players are speaking with NFL teams virtually for the second consecutive year. As many of us understand, all of these constant Zoom meetings can start to blur together, possibly explaining some of Mills' confusion.
Mills has spent the past two seasons as the starter for the Cardinal. He started six of eight games in 2019 due to injuries to K.J. Costello. Mills completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,960 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions during that season.
In 2020, Mills completed 66.2 percent of his passes for 1,508 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions through five games as a senior. He also added three rushing touchdowns. Mills missed the season opener due to COVID-19 testing protocol errors.
NFL teams are allowed to conduct up to five video calls per prospect leading to the draft, and each call can last up to one hour. There is no limit to how many phone conversations NFL teams can conduct with draft-eligible players.
Jimmy Garoppolo appears to be penciled in as the 49ers' starter in 2021. Josh Johnson and Josh Rosen are the only other quarterbacks under contract. The team is reportedly hosting Joe Flacco for a visit. He could serve as a veteran backup for Garoppolo, who missed 10 games last season due to injuries. San Francisco remains a candidate to add a quarterback through the draft.
"Unfortunately, Garoppolo was injured and was not able to maximize that offense and get as much out of it as they were able to," Mills said via NBC Sports Bay Area while discussing the 49ers offense. "But they're definitely doing some things at the next level that I can see myself fit into."
