While the pairing is unlikely, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah spoke with 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin on Friday and explained why he feels Wilson with head coach Kyle Shanahan would be his dream match.
"When you look at those top five guys, to me, my dream match (for the 49ers) would be Zach Wilson, just for how he plays and what he can do on schedule, off schedule, work off the boot action that they do," Jeremiah told Martin. "The same reasons we say he's a great fit with the Jets are the same reasons why he would be a great fit with Kyle. Same offense, same system.
"So, that, to me, would be the dream fit, but again, I think he's going to be a New York Jet. I don't think that's going to happen. And then it comes down to those other three guys (Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones), which I feel like with Trey Lance, you have an ability upgrade over Jimmy Garoppolo, and a lot more ceiling, a lot more growth there to expand your offense."
Jeremiah also doesn't rule out the possibility of the 49ers drafting Mac Jones out of Alabama. At least some of that may have to do with the comments on Friday by Chris Simms of NBC Sports, a close friend of Shanahan's.
"Where we sit, you take in all the information you can get," Jeremiah said Friday on NFL Network, "and when I see Chris Simms, and I know that Chris Simms and Kyle Shanahan go back to the University of Texas together, and Chris is on social media saying, 'Don't rule out Mac Jones,' I'm not ruling out Mac Jones."
