The 49ers own the No. 3 overall pick after trading multiple first-rounders and a third-rounder to the Miami Dolphins on March 26. Rodgers is a California native, growing up in Chico. He wanted San Francisco to draft him No. 1 overall in 2005. The Niners chose Alex Smith instead. Rodgers fell to Green Bay at No. 24.
Today, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network broke the news that the 49ers inquired about Rodgers on Wednesday, which seemed curious considering the 2021 NFL Draft was just a day away. San Francisco is expected to select a quarterback with its top selection — Mac Jones of Alabama, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, or Justin Fields of Ohio State.
The picture became clearer when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback and three-time league MVP informed the Packers that he has no desire to return.
"To date, Aaron Rodgers has not budged," Schefter said. "And so we have standoff here that nobody knows exactly where it's going. And thus, the 49ers called the Green Bay Packers last night, and the Packers said, 'We're not trading him.'"
