San Francisco 49ers running back Jeff Wilson Jr. will miss the start of the 2021 season. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that the player recently underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus, and is expected to miss four to six months as he recovers.

In January, the 49ers re-signed Wilson to a one-year deal. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent.

Wilson joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of North Texas in 2018. He carried the football 126 times for a team-leading 600 yards with seven rushing touchdowns while adding 13 receptions for 133 yards with three receiving touchdowns — all career-highs — through 12 games in 2020. The running back's 10 total touchdowns last season led all 49ers players.

San Francisco drafted two running backs this offseason. The team selected Trey Sermon of Ohio State in the third round and Elijah Mitchell of Louisiana in the sixth round.

Wilson, 25, is entering his fourth NFL season. He has recorded 971 rushing yards on 219 attempts with 11 rushing touchdowns during his three NFL seasons, per Pro Football Reference.
