The San Francisco 49ers took a risk on the injured defender, signing him to a one-year deal while hoping he would recover in time for the 2019 season. Verrett appeared in just one game before landing on injured reserve again, this time with an ankle injury.
Last year was different, though. Verrett made it through most of 2020 unscathed and was among the 49ers' best defensive backs. San Francisco re-signed him this offseason.
Verrett was once again asked about his injury history and finally being able to head into an offseason without worrying about rehabbing.
"I don't want to deal with any more injury questions," Verrett told reporters. "That's in the past. I finished the season healthy, going into this season healthy, and looking to play lights-out football for this team and win some games."
Verrett appeared in 13 games last season, his highest mark since that fairly injury-free 2015 campaign that earned him a Pro Bowl selection. The cornerback hopes to build on the momentum he created.
"Last year was definitely a good year for me to get back, acclimated in the game, being away from it for so long," Verrett said. "I had fun flying around with those guys. That was a big part of why I wanted to come back. It's just been good, finishing the season healthy, being able to have a healthy offseason. I feel it's just going to be a good thing for me going forward."
Verrett finished last season with 60 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two interceptions, and seven passes defensed during his career-high 802 defensive snaps.
